MS Word: Client-side merging

 

Step 1 Creating the Data Source:  to merge a document with data, Word requires that the data be made available locally.  Internet Explorer saves the data locally to your hard drive, generally in the c:\temp\ directory.  A failure to do so is typically a result of failing to do one of the following:
  1. Set up this website as a Trusted Site. (See IE Help)
  2. Have a copy of Microsoft Word (97 or later) installed.
  3. Have all copies of Word closed.
  4. Have Windows Scripting installed. (Part of IE 5.0)
  5. Make sure c:\temp is available and the user has access to it.

Step 4 Opening the Data Source:  Failed to open data source (z:\temp\Cover Letter to Client.doc). Error was The document name or path is not valid. Try one or more of the following: * Check the path to make sure it was typed correctly. * On the File menu, click Open. Search for the file using this dialog box. (z:\temp\Cover Letter to Client.doc)
